Operational paradigm for electrical systems in the context of the inclusion of non-conventional loads

The electrical grid faces multiple challenges from the growing connection of converter-based loads and non-conventional renewable energy generation—which are less predictable than conventional loads and generation—and from the limitations in transmission and distribution (T&D) infrastructure, which affect the safe and reliable operation of electric power systems. Key challenges include appropriately representing these components in electrical studies, assessing their responses to disturbances, determining their effects on system stability and resiliency under extreme events, and establishing technical criteria for their integration.

In this context, the panel evaluates the criteria for specifying, selecting, and commissioning an electromobility-related substation in a high-density urban area. The panel will also discuss the generalization of these criteria within a regulatory framework and the concept of a special load. Finally, the panel will discuss the challenges involved in restoring electrical infrastructure after a widespread blackout caused by an extreme event, such as a hurricane.
